We've spoken to Vanessa Couzens, Co-Owner and Salon Director at Headonist, about what it's like to run one of MK's top salons.
What do you love most about running a salon? No two days are exactly the same! I can be dealing with suppliers one minute, then sorting out a blocked basin the next! And I also have my own client list each day which is the best bit. Hairdressing is a very sociable profession so when I have my regular clients in, it’s like meeting up with old friends.
What's the atmosphere like in Headonist? On Saturdays, our busiest day, there’s such a buzz! The whole team work so well together and we’re all focused on our clients, so it ‘ups’ everyone’s game. We’re a very professional team but we aim to be welcoming and relaxed at the same time.
What’s seems to be a popular hair do, style or treatment at the salon at the moment?Ombre and balayage colours have been popular for ages. They can look really beautiful and are relatively low maintenance. Fashion colours are also so on-trend from pinks and teal to the palest silver grey. Not so hassle-free though! On the beauty side OPI gel nails are the ultimate in low maintenance chip free nails and very popular.
Is there any particular type of treatment you would suggest as the ultimate pamper? You can’t beat a relaxing full body deep muscle massage with aromatherapy oils combined with a Dermalogica Prescription facial for sheer indulgence. Our beauty therapists do a Face Mapping beforehand and will create your bespoke prescription from the whole Dermalogica range to ensure the right products are used for your skin. Over 2 hours of bliss for £90 and we’ll send you away with some samples to try at home.
What keeps the team motivated at Headonist?Hairdressing is a very creative job so when you’ve totally changed a client’s look and they leave the salon looking and feeling a million dollars, it’s the best thing ever! And we always appreciate when a client leaves a review – it’s always nice to receive praise, isn’t it. And if we haven’t met our client’s expectations, it’s good to know that too. We can’t do something about it if we don’t know there’s a problem.
Why is Headonist different to other salons?Every salon aims for good client service but we try and give the client the best experience too. From start to finish we try and make it a welcoming, comfortable, easy and hassle free visit. So for example we have extra wide styling chairs for comfort and fully extended backwash chairs to avoid back strain. We offer a huge choice of refreshments from your own individual cafetiere of coffee, to fruit teas, chilled wine and cool beer all with nibbles. We’re very proud that The Good Salon Guide awarded us 5 stars in 2010 for our ‘personalised service and staff training’ and we’ve held it ever since – the only salon in MK to have this prestigious award.
